BIOGRAPHY
Jill Joy is a contemporary artist working at the intersection of New Transcendentalism and the Light and Space movement, creating evocative works that explore consciousness, perception, and spatial dynamics. Based in Southern California, she is strongly influenced by the light, ocean and the natural elements of the coastal desert. Her practice synthesizes an exploration of the sublime with meticulous formal execution, currently manifesting in oil paintings, detailed sculptural renderings, and activist-driven digital art. Her evolving style synthesizes industrial materials with traditional techniques—notably utilizing aluminum panels, oil on canvas, and reflective glass beads to manipulate light refraction. This meticulous engagement with material and form anchors a deeper conceptual investigation, resulting in immersive visual experiences where surface and depth constantly shift to challenge the viewer's optical presence. Over her career, her dedication to the field has been recognized with notable distinctions, including a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship and a Bombay Sapphire/Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation award.
Her work is featured in several corporate and public collections, including Douglas Emmett properties, and has garnered critical acclaim from publications like the Huffington Post and Art Ltd.. ARTIST STATEMENT
My practice is rooted in the belief that art is a high-vibration technology capable of re-calibrating neurochemistry and catalyzing individual and civic transformation and repair. As a structuralist of the sublime, I operate within Transcendental Light and Space, at the intersection of New Transcendentalism and the traditional Light and Space movement. I seek to manifest expanded states of presence through codified, material reality.
My process is evolving to one of neuroaesthetics—investigating the physiological impact of specific color frequencies on the viewer’s brain. The visible light spectrum (ROYGBIV) and the chakra system (as a conceptual, energetic mapping framework) are the foundational architecture of my methodology. My primary mediums are light and color.
My work asks a contemporary question: In an age of digital depletion and social inequity, can art provide a biological sanctuary? It explores the Architecture of Transcendence, treating spiritual expansion not as an abstract concept, but as a measurable necessity for personal and civic healing and evolution.
My work operates in two distinct, overlapping spheres: phenomenological and societal. It posits that an equitable society is the physical expression of a transcendental state. I’m currently developing the Enlightenment Project, a multi-disciplinary immersive experience that includes Enlightenment 2D and 3D, which address the internal architecture of expanded states and the Enlightenment Campaign, which addresses the external architecture of society. All three seek to establish balance and evolution.
I am deeply influenced by the abstract expressionism, minimalism and the Light and Space movement, including Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin and Mary Course.
