Consciousness Series

On view at the Jill Joy Gallery Through Feb 25.  Click for pricing and exhibition details.

The Consciousness Series is an expression of the unseen worlds of spiritual and emotional energy and their interplay as the individual soul evolves towards a higher state of consciousness.

The paintings sometimes move from dark to light representing the movement from unconscious to conscious awareness. They are a snapshot of mental and emotional experience time and space, the mind aware of itself in a field of universal love. The paintings are executed in a meditative trance and thus become meditative objects, contemporary mandalas.

This work references the sky and sea as metaphors for universal consciousness within which the individual soul experiences and evolves.

Special techniques I developed with oil paint and mediums create luminous surfaces that change with the light as the sky changes with the trajectory of the sun and as the mind changes with the nature of thought.

I look up and I see the sky.
It becomes part of me.
My feelings like clouds
against the clear blue vastness,
scudding across the backdrop of
infinite consciousness.
I look out and I see the ocean.
It becomes part of me.
My memories like islands
in a sea of universal mind.

Devotion, oil on canvas, 48x60x2.5", 2014

This painting is about spiritual devotion and also plain old human love…loving someone intensely and how our devotion to that person can transform us regardless of the circumstances. It’s part of my current series, Consciousness, but also a subset of work I call Evolution – 4 or 5 paintings that represent the leap from one level of consciousness to the next.

The Evolution works are dynamic and give a sense of bursting into growth and new awareness. They are loosely tied to the chakras (energy centers in our body), indigo is the color of the 6th chakra and violet is the color of the crown or 7th chakra. This painting is somewhere in between those two…a deep violet or purple indigo representing the transition from one level of consciousness to the next. Some info below on the symbolism of the colors and the Chakras (citation).

Indigo – 6th Chakra (third eye)

Indigo opens the door to the Divine and it is the color that we associate with night. It is at night, when our senses become finer and a different part of us awakens. Indigo brings clarity to the sense organs - your seeing, hearing and feeling. Indigo It is also connected to your sixth sense - your third eye.

Indigo is a bridge between heaven and earth, between the left and right hemispheres and also between life and death and helps to make a transition towards life or towards death. Indigo color energy is an energy of deep change. It allows you to transform the energies of lower chakras into higher spiritual vibrations. You must be cautious though, because you can become ungrounded and disconnected with the life on earth and with your family and friends. As you unfold the petals of your third eye chakra, you begin to recognize patterns. You can see where you have been, where you are stuck, and where you are going.

You begin to experience those "Aha" moments. Moments of insight and clarity. You are recognizing your patterns and are able to relate everything to a larger picture and what it means. Illusions are shattered and dreams are integrated. You begin to experience wholeness and sense of tranquility and inner knowing - wisdom. You begin to see that you can consciously create your life. And that your vision for the future is a creative act of will.

Violet – 7th Chakra (crown (top) of the head)

Violet connects with sadness of letting go and also with joy of transformation. There is peace and tranquility in the new found knowledge of profound change. Violet color is cleansing and purifying. It is the color of magic, ritual, cleansing, purifying, connecting, mystery, and mysticism. It is a color that allows us to glimpse other realities, beyond our physical and material reality of this earthly existence. It is pure cosmic energy.

Violet is a color of reconciliation. Of bringing together polarities - male and female, day and night, hot and cold, heaven and earth, right brain and left brain. In this state of balance, you feel the connection with other beings, with heaven, with earth, with all of Universe. There is no separation, no duality.

Jill Joy, Growth, oil on canvas, 60x48x2.5", 2016

Growth is an expression of personal evolution as I became able to recognize the presence of love in my heart and my life despite imperfect circumstances. As a child of an alcoholic and abandoning parent (one each) I strove for perfection in adolescence and through the first part of adulthood as a way of staving off the demons and bad feelings I inherited from my upbringing. As I grew to care more for myself, I recognized the fruitless and limiting nature of this approach and how ultimately, it closed me off to love and close relationships. This painting reflects the period in my life when the old paradigm burst into the new.

It's part of the Consciousness Series but also part of a sub-set of this series I call Evolution.

I think when we grow as people, often by recognizing a truth we have up to that point avoided or been unaware of, there is a burst of energy that occurs inside of us like the creation of a new universe. We explode outward and inward at the same time and we are no longer the same person. Our consciousness evolves. It’s a subtle process but very real.

A painting about the evolution of two souls evolving together on their own horizon. The spiritual and emotional landscape we inhabit together is a thing of beauty.

In this series the inside is the outside...an effort to represent a visual landscape of spiritual and emotional reality.

Jill Joy - I Thought The World of You - oil on canvas - 48x60" - 2015

This work has a lighter palette than I have been working in lately. It's part of the process of working through the end of a relationship that meant a lot to me. I ended it, I have come to understand, because it no longer served my soul and my growth as a person and an artist. I ended it despite a very strong feeling of love for this person. Art is for me a way of processing my life. I express my thought and emotions through my abstract painting as thoughts and emotions are abstract.

That is the beauty of contemporary art in my opinion: It give us a visible, tangible access to those processes within ourselves, our lives and our emotions that we can't see.

Grey Skies addresses continued aspiration in the face of loss and struggle. It is an acknowledgment of the difficulty and beauty one encounters when making difficult changes that bring greater authenticity and meaning to ones life. It's a painting about the process of personal evolution. Stark. Dramatic. Beautiful. Subtle.

The tower motif in my work represents the aspiration of the soul towards unity with universal consciousness.

I sometimes paint to calm myself. It is an act, like meditation, that slows the thinking mind and connects me to something beyond myself. This painting itself was an act of Solace, a moment in time when I took refuge in color, rhythm, movement and beauty from a turbulent world.

Rain addresses the purification of the mind and soul of old ideas and insecurities and the birth of new beginnings. Rainwater clears the atmosphere of the sky of debris as tears clear the soul of illusion. We are greater beings than we think we are.

The rising sun icon in my work represents the emergence of the spirit or soul from the sea of ego based desires and attachments toward an illuminated state of unconditional love and forgiveness. Specifically "Rain" addresses the purifying nature of rainfall as the acceptance of change which allows us to clear our personal "atmosphere" and start fresh after experience has burnished us.

This is the most recent painting from this series. This painting is about the transformation of anger to compassion. Change. We can sometimes feel it coming. Pressure builds. We may welcome it or we may avoid it but we avoid the largest changes in our lives at our peril.

I have learned, by swimming in the ocean, that the best way to survive an oncoming wave is to dive right into it rather than stand waist deep in water resisting it.

This painting was inspired by a dream I had of the vast pull back of the ocean as a huge wave built, and then the wave itself. I saw it coming from a high vantage point, coming to wipe away my known life and leave empty space for something new to begin. This dream occurred during a pivotal time in my life when I was ready to relinquish one lifestyle in its entirety and embrace another which was my destiny - to devote myself entirely to being an artist. The poem below was written in tandem with creating this work.

A wave.
has crashed through my life
and separated me
from what has tormented me
and sustained me.
I sit here in the silence
in the receding tide
Wondering.
what will become of me

Sometimes there's a storm coming, you can feel it. The pressure builds, the winds rise. It may be calm outside but you can feel a storm brewing in your life and it's not remotely clear who you will be or what you will be after it passes. It is the very beginning of something new and also the very start of the end of what currently is.

Most of us would prefer to ignore the storm until it passes. But some of us want to stand on a cliff over looking the ocean with the wind blowing in our faces and the rain beating down on our skin.
